Travellers who enjoy experiencing foreign cultures while on holiday have been encouraged to pay a visit to Dubai during Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting.

Ramadan, which falls approximately between 21 August and 19 September this year, is a religious tradition that sees Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and any other practices that can be associated with excess and indulgence between the hours of sunrise and sunset.

Dubai 'comes to life' at sundown during the period, according to the emirate's tourism marketing department, with banquets held at hotels and restaurants, often accompanied by live music and dancing.

Ramadan also falls during Dubai's 'kids go free' promotion, which offers free entry to children under 16 at attractions including the Dubai Aquarium, Montgomerie Golf Club and Dolphin Bay at Atlantis the Palm.

Ian Scott, UK and Ireland director at the tourism marketing department, said: 'Ramadan offers a great opportunity for visitors to take advantage of Dubai's cultural offering. Dubai is proud to promote its Arabian heritage alongside its outstanding contemporary offering, which combine to appeal to guests of all ages.

'And with the "kids go free" promotion running throughout Ramadan, there is no better time to take full advantage of Dubai's unrivalled affordable luxury offering.'

Flights to Dubai are provided by Emirates, Virgin Atlantic, Air France and other carriers.
