P&O Cruises launches charity initiative
14 Aug 2009
P&O Cruises has announced the launch of a new charity initiative that is designed to raise money for indigenous children from the remote Palm Island community in Queensland, Australia.
The company has joined up with Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter Catherine Freeman for the Walk the Decks project.
Every P&O Cruises voyage from Australia will offer guests the opportunity to take a walk around the ship and make a voluntary contribution to the Catherine Freeman Foundation.
Thousands of passengers are expected to take part in the initiative, walking more than 25,000km every year during their time at sea.
Ms Freeman said: 'The foundation is a way for me to support others in the same way that people have supported me in my career, so I'm really happy to have Walk the Decks join the cause.'
Ann Sherry, chief executive of Carnival Australia, added: 'Education is the key to creating better opportunities for indigenous children, and the foundation has been very successful in keeping kids at school and offering scholarship programs vital to improving the future for children on Palm Island.'
The range of services that P&O Cruises will offer from Australia over the coming months includes two 12-night Indonesian voyages that will depart Fremantle on 23 January and 12 February 2010.
