Europe 'still thought of as expensive'
18 Aug 2009
Most destinations in Europe are still believed to be expensive propositions when it comes to taking a holiday, it has been claimed.
Alistair Rowland, director of distribution at The Co-operative Travel, explained that the high costs of travelling to the continent have led to the development of 'mid-haul' destinations like Greece and Turkey.
He added the recent strengthening of the pound has seen the situation improve somewhat and it is likely that the coming months will see a rise in all-inclusive holidays, rather than city breaks.
'When the euro was at a pound for euro, Europe and particularly Spain and Greece, was seen as very expensive,' Mr Rowland noted.
'So doing a short break there is the most expensive way to trade a holiday. If you are off setting the price of your flight over seven days, then that is better value than over two or three nights.'
The pound recently hit a ten-month high against the dollar and a one-month high against the euro.
