Czech Tourism has released figures showing that Prague Castle was the most popular tourist attraction in the Czech Republic in 2008.

The building, which has a history stretching back to the ninth century, was visited by some 1.34m people throughout the year.

Over the centuries, Prague Castle has hosted Czech kings, presidents and Holy Roman emperors and currently houses the country's crown jewels.

Prague dominated the list of the Czech Republic's most popular attractions, with the city zoo in second place with 1.2m visitors and the Jewish Museum and National Museum in third and fourth positions respectively.

The Babylon entertainment complex in Liberec, which welcomed some 540,000 tourists last year, was the only attraction outside Prague in the top five.

Lesna Zoo, the Prague National Gallery and the Terezin memorial also appeared in the top ten.

Travellers interested in seeing what the Czech Republic has to offer can catch flights to Prague with British Airways, easyJet, Czech Airlines and other carriers.
