The Portuguese National Tourist Office has launched a campaign to encourage travel to the Azores archipelago.
Nine islands make up the Azores group, which is located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,500km from Lisbon and 3,900km from the east coast of North America.
The tourist board described the Azores as a 'unique travel destination', combining 'beautiful natural landscapes and a rich cultural heritage'.
Activities on offer around the islands include whale watching, deep sea diving, fishing and swimming with dolphins.
Miguel Perestrello, Portugal's director for tourism in the UK, said: 'The Azores archipelago is a unique destination which, until now, has been almost untouched by British tourism.
'Our aim is to raise awareness and open up this beautiful group of islands to British tourists.'
Travellers can catch flights to Ponta Delgada, the capital of Sao Miguel island, with SATA International.
The city is often used as a base to take island hopping trips around the Azores.
