Backpackers urged to visit New Zealand

Backpackers planning a trip to Australia in the future have been urged to 'go all the way' and extend their journey to New Zealand.

Tourism New Zealand launched a campaign to attract more backpackers to the country at a conference focusing on the sector, which took place at the Auckland University of Technology on 17 September.

George Hickton, chief executive of the agency, said the backpacker market had showed 'resilience' during the economic downturn and had continued to travel.

The new promotional campaign will focus on northern hemisphere markets including the UK and Europe and will seek to ensure that New Zealand is one of the main destinations that young travellers want to visit.

Mr Hickton said: 'Many backpackers from the UK and Europe go as far as Australia in their gap year, but we want to challenge them to complete the journey and "go all the way" by coming down to New Zealand.'

Tourism New Zealand revealed that backpackers have a positive effect on tourism industries as they spend longer than average in their destinations and travel widely within countries, meaning different regions benefit from their spending.
