Bangkok is one of the world's cheapest destinations for a city break, according to a new study by
Virgin Money Travel Insurance.
The company researched the cost of car hire, accommodation and other holiday products in 20 of the world's leading holiday cities and found that the Thai capital was the most affordable.
Dublin was a fairly distant second, while Prague, Stockholm and Sydney completed the top five.
The cost of flights was not included in the research, which concluded that New York is the most expensive destination for a two-night break, followed by Milan and Moscow.
Grant Bather of
Virgin Money Travel Insurance said: 'City breaks are big business now and our research shows you don't have to break the bank when you're on holiday.
'While going further afield might feel more expensive, tourists can recoup a lot of extra expense because of the value for money in cities once you arrive. A two-night stay in Milan is over three times more expensive than in Bangkok.'
The widespread perception of London as one of the world's most expensive cities was challenged by the study, with the English capital found to be cheaper than Cape Town, Toronto, Berlin and other destinations.
