29 Sep 2009
Germany's national tourist board has announced details of a series of routes that travellers can follow to make the most of the country's Christmas markets and other festive offerings.
One itinerary begins in Trier, the oldest city in Germany, and heads to Koblenz, passing by the castles of the upper Rhine valley and finishing in the romantic city of Heidelberg on the Neckar river.
In the south, a route starting in the wine region surrounding Freiburg takes travellers through Augsburg and on to Regensburg, which hosts a Christmas market at the Thurn and Taxis palace.
Wurzburg and its Residenz palace mark the end of the journey, which stretches hundreds of miles across southern Germany.
People visiting the north of the country can head to Erfurt to try some of its famous Christmas cake or see the world's biggest music box in Osnabruck.
Potsdam's Dutch festival will host a Christmas festival, while Rostock will be the setting for northern Germany's biggest festive market.
