Travellers looking for an active and enjoyable winter break have been encouraged to pay a visit to Helsinki.

The winter season stretches from October to April in Finland's capital city and offers experiences for everyone from active families to weekend shoppers, according to the local tourist board.

Aleksanterinkatu, Helsinki's main thoroughfare, is transformed into the destination's official 'Christmas street' from 22 November and features a host of festive illuminations and events.

People visiting in December can also head to the St Thomas Christmas market in Esplanade Park and attend concerts in churches and halls around the city.

Senate Square will be one of the most popular destinations to visit on New Year's Eve, with live music and dance performances, a light installation and a fireworks display set to entertain tourists.

There are many attractions for travellers to visit in Helsinki throughout the year, such as the zoo on Korkeasaari Island and Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress.
