Brits 'still love Greek islands'
14 Oct 2009

The Greek islands, which have been a traditionally popular summer holiday destination among British people for several years, are continuing to pull in the crowds, according to an industry spokeswoman.

Sofia Panayiotaki, director of the UK and Ireland office at the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO), said that Greece has many attributes that encourage holidaymakers to return to the destination every year.

Visitors will find 'beautiful' landscapes and scenery, as well as hospitable people and affordable prices, according to Ms Panayiotaki.

Commenting on the specific locations that prove popular, the GNTO spokeswoman said: 'Brits seem to prefer Corfu in the Ionian Islands, Rhodes in the Aegean and Crete which is south-east of Greece.

'There is a tendency in the last year to go to new destinations … after the movie Mamma Mia! was on, there was a big increase in the arrival of Brits to the island of Skopelos where the film was shot.'

According to the tourism organisation's statistics, between 60m and 70m holidaymakers visit Greece every year.
