Lisbon was one of the biggest winners at the European regional ceremony of this year's World Travel Awards, which was held at the Marriott Praia D'El Rey in Portugal on 17 October.

The Portuguese capital was named the continent's best travel location and also picked up the leading cruise and city break destination honours.

Lufthansa won the accolade for Europe's leading airline, while Virgin Atlantic was recognised for its 25th birthday marketing campaign and easyJet was voted the best budget carrier.

In the hospitality sector, Le Bristol in Paris picked up the award for Europe's leading hotel and Forte Village in Italy was named the top family resort.

Graham Cooke, president of the World Travel Awards, said: 'The past 12 months have brought several challenges, namely the economic downturn and the outbreak of swine flu, which has impacted travel and tourism worldwide; today's winners have remained focused on their long-term objectives and continued to deliver above and beyond the call of duty, setting an industry example.'

Nearly 1,500 travel companies were nominated in a total of 177 categories for the awards.
