Air France took delivery of its first Airbus A380 on 30 October and will use the aircraft to operate flights to New York JFK from Paris Charles de Gaulle.
The daily service, which will be the first connection between Europe and the US served by an Airbus A380, is scheduled to get underway on 23 November.
Air France has ordered 12 of the giant planes from Airbus, three of which will be delivered by spring 2010.
In addition to the New York flights, the airline will use an A380 to operate a service from Paris to Johannesburg during the forthcoming winter season.
Pierre-Henri Gourgeon, chief executive of
Air France, said: 'Each A380 will enable
Air France to save 12m to 15m a year, which, in today's depressed economic climate, provides the company with the means to withstand the crisis.
'
Air France will therefore be able to offer its customers even greater comfort, while keeping its costs under control.'
The airline's A380 has the capacity to carry a total of 538 passengers in three classes - economy, business and first.
