Extra funding 'to boost New Zealand tourism'

Extra funding 'to boost New Zealand tourism'
2 Nov 2009

Additional tourism industry funding announced by the government of New Zealand is expected to lead to a significant increase in the number of people visiting the country.

Air New Zealand said that the destination will now be able to win back market share from other popular countries that have benefited from increases in investment.

Ed Sims, general manager of the airline's international operations, said that the New Zealand tourism industry has faced a 'tough year' with the exception of strong visitor numbers from Australia.

He added: 'An improvement in visitor arrival numbers for September shows there is good potential for the industry and the government should be congratulated for the funding boost, which demonstrates its confidence in securing ongoing growth from New Zealand's highest export-earning industry.'

The new investment from the government will include funds to cover marketing campaigns in North America and China.

Air New Zealand recently announced that it will be cutting its domestic air fares by up to 23% this year, making it easier for people to travel within the country.
