Western Australia recognised in Lonely Planet list

The South West region in Western Australia has been named one of the world's top ten holiday locations in a new Lonely Planet guide.

It is the only Australian destination to feature in the run-down of the best regions for travellers to visit in 2010.

According to Tourism Western Australia, the South West boasts a variety of natural attractions, including pristine coastline and reserves that provide a habitat for flora and fauna found nowhere else on the planet.

Travellers who take flights to Perth can make use of a new bypass that cuts 30 minutes off the amount of time it takes to drive to the region.

Sascha Papalia, a spokeswoman for the local tourist board, said: 'It's excellent that Lonely Planet has recognised the whole of the South West region as significant – from Harvey to Albany and from Bunbury to Margaret River.

'The region is a perfect blend of natural experiences such as beautiful beaches and tall timber forests combined with world class food, wine and boutique accommodation.'

Activities on offer in the South West include walking along the Bibbulmun track, canoeing in Nannup and swimming with dolphins in Bunbury.
