Vancouver Aquarium invites public to name baby whale
9 Nov 2009
The public is being invited to come up with a name for the baby beluga whale that was recently born at Vancouver Aquarium.
It was announced that name suggestions will be invited online between 9 and 22 November, with five entries being shortlisted and the overall winner set to be announced on 2 December.
Vancouver Aquarium said that the name should reflect beluga whales' Arctic origins and have an association with Inuit culture and language.
The person who suggests the winning name will win a grand prize of an encounter with the baby whale, an annual family membership to the aquarium and a voucher to use in the gift shop.
Other beluga whales at Vancouver Aquarium include Aurora, who was named after the aurora borealis, or northern lights, and Imaq, whose name means 'the sea' in Inuktitut.
The attraction is located in the heart of Stanley Park in Vancouver and is home to marine animals including dolphins, sea lions, turtles and otters.
