Travellers flock to Berlin for Wall celebrations
12 Nov 2009
Germany's capital city saw a substantial increase in visitor numbers this month as people celebrated 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Berlin Tourism Marketing revealed that more than 2m people visited the destination to mark the occasion, setting a new record for the city's travel industry.
On 9 November, hundreds of thousands of Berlin residents and foreign visitors gathered at the Brandenburg Gate, which was the focal point of the celebrations.
Burkhard Kieker, chief executive of the city's tourist board, said the steadily rising visitor numbers showed that 'the world loves this new Berlin'.
He added: 'Innumerable spectators watched the ceremony at the Brandenburg Gate live on TV. These moving images have made an impact and prompted a desire to find out more about Berlin.
'The appeal of Berlin as a site of freedom, as a focal point of European history and a city where people can live together in a climate of tolerance and openness will continue to grow in the future.'
The Wall was built to separate the eastern and western parts of Berlin and its fall in 1989 paved the way for the reunification of Germany as a single country.
