VisitScotland has officially launched its Winter White campaign with a special event at Edinburgh Castle.

Against the backdrop of the castle's Great Hall, an icy glass tiara created by Edinburgh College of Art student Julia Malle was unveiled to mark the beginning of the city's winter tourism season.

Last year's Winter White campaign was the most successful ever, leading to an increase in the number of visitors to Scotland's capital city and generating some £63.5m for the economy.

The initiative aims to encourage people to visit the country during winter by highlighting tourist attractions, accommodation offers and activities.

Scottish tourism minister Jim Mather said: 'Winter festivals, stunning seasonal scenery and homegrown Scottish traditions are all part of the innovative ways of attracting new visitors to our great country, ensuring that Scotland continues to be one of the must-visit destinations in the world.

'Tourism in Scotland can no longer be considered seasonal as the Winter White campaign is a major contributor to the Scottish tourism industry.'

Wildlife and outdoor activities will be at the centre of the VisitScotland campaign, with tourists encouraged to see destinations such as the Northern Isles and the island of Mull.
