One of Holland's biggest advantages as a holiday destination is the warm welcome that it offers to visitors, according to the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions.

A spokeswoman for the organisation said the Dutch are 'warm, open, laid-back and have great respect for people'.

She added: 'They enjoy speaking to visitors from different countries and often speak several languages, making communication easier.

'The friendly Dutch atmosphere makes visitors feel relaxed and welcome on their holiday.'

The comments follow a survey of 3,000 British tourists carried out by OnePoll which found that Holland is considered the most welcoming country in Europe, followed by Greece, Portugal and Italy.

France is the most unwelcoming nation, according to the research, ahead of Germany and Belgium.

Commenting on the tourist attractions on offer in Holland, the spokeswoman recommended a visit to the leading museums in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht.

Britain and Ireland is one of Holland's most important tourism source markets, sending an average of 1.75m visitors to the country every year.
