New York prepares for end-of-year celebrations
17 Nov 2009
NYC & Company, the official tourism marketing agency for New York City, has announced details of the 2009-10 New Year's Eve celebrations set to take place in Times Square.
Revellers will begin arriving in Times Square late in the afternoon, with most gathering in the area from 42nd to 47th streets between Broadway and Seventh Avenue.
At around 18:00 local time, the famous New Year's Eve Ball will be illuminated and raised, ready for its 60-second descent at 23:59.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and a special guest will push the button to send the ball on its way before a giant '2010' sign is illuminated above Times Square.
George Fertitta, chief executive of NYC & Company, said: 'There is no more exciting place to be on New Year's Eve than Times Square in New York City - and revellers will find even more space to spread out, with this year's closure of Times Square to traffic.'
Over 100m television viewers in the US and around 1bn worldwide are expected to watch the ball drop.
