Vancouver airport (YVR) is currently readying itself for what is expected to be the busiest day in the hub's history.

On 1 March 2010, the day after the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics, some 39,000 people and over 77,000 pieces of luggage are expected to depart from Vancouver.

The Games will run from 12 to 28 February, during which time an additional 231,000 passengers are expected to travel through the airport carrying relatively large amounts of oversized luggage.

Jan Damnavits of the Games' Vancouver Organising Committee said: 'As the official airport of the 2010 Winter Games, we're confident YVR is ready to help us host the world in less than 90 days' time.

'More than 6,500 athletes and officials from around the world will be part of the 2010 Winter Games, along with tens of thousands of spectators and media whose first experience with Canada's Games will be through the gates of YVR.'

Measures being put in place at the airport include the permanent addition of a snow removal and de-icing system, which was recently tested out on an Air Canada Boeing 767.

There will also be a two-fold increase in volunteers and a new reservations plan for landings and takeoffs.
