Air Canada has begun a trial of the Gogo inflight internet service, which is provided by Aircell.
The facility is currently available on select flights to Toronto and Montreal in Canada from Los Angeles.
Following the initial test period, which will run until 29 January 2010, the airline will assess customer feedback before deciding whether to introduce the facility on other routes.
Air Canada is the first Canadian carrier to offer its customers access to the web while they are flying.
Louise McKenven, the airline's senior marketing director, said: 'With this service, our customers will be able to email, work and surf the net while flying and more fully enjoy what is already a superior travel experience that includes complimentary seatback entertainment and access to standard power outlets.'
If the trial is successful, inflight internet access will initially be rolled out on
Air Canada's routes in North America.
It was recently revealed that the airline will be developing its network in Asia next year with the launch of new flights to Tokyo from Calgary.
