Lonely Planet has revealed the results of a survey carried out within its global community of staff and authors to find the world's most popular destinations for a good meal.

When asked about their favourite city to 'gorge yourself with food', the respondents awarded New York City and Singapore joint first place.

The publishing company revealed that these destinations top the list for the variety of options they offer, from 'cheap street food to pricey fine dining'.

There was also a tie for second place between Rome and Paris, with Lonely Planet revealing that the Italian capital is popular with its staff for being 'a city full of pizzas, pastas, wine and gelato'.

France's capital city, according to the firm, is simply 'a decadent food lovers' dream'.

Melbourne, San Francisco and Oakland also featured in the results, finishing in joint third place.

Lonely Planet also announced the publication of its new guide The USA Book: A Journey Through America, which features more than 400 photographs and plenty of information about travelling in the country.
