UK tourism industry targets 2012 Olympics
20 Nov 2009

A number of British tourism associations have announced that they are uniting to ensure that the industry makes the most of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

VisitBritain, Visit London, the European Tour Operators Association and UKinbound have all signed up to a joint working party to encourage travel to Britain for the sporting event.

According to Visit London, the accessibility of the city and the UK to the rest of the world means that the country has 'distinct advantages' over previous destinations that have hosted the Games.

Ken Kelling, the tourism agency's director of communications, said the time is right to focus on maximising the benefits of the Olympics as the industry is already preparing its promotional strategies.

He added: 'London has so much to offer sports fans and non-sports fans alike and visitors are well used to travelling to and from the city for business or pleasure.

'We are expecting the atmosphere to be amazing during 2012 and no-one will want to miss out.'

The eyes of the sporting world will be on Vancouver in Canada next February when it hosts the 2010 Winter Olympics.
