Darcey Bussell to name new P&O Cruises ship

P&O Cruises has announced that ballet dancer Darcey Bussell will be the guest of honour at the official naming ceremony for its new ship Azura next year.

She will fly back from her home in Sydney, Australia to attend a special event on 10 April, exact details of which are yet to be confirmed.

The cruise operator describes the 115,000-tonne Azura as 'the most sophisticated addition' to its fleet.

Ms Bussell said she was 'excited, honoured and … filled with trepidation' to be invited to name the new vessel.

Carol Marlow, managing director of P&O Cruises, said: 'Darcey Bussell epitomises glamour, sophistication and elegance, all qualities we have strived to achieve in Azura.

'Azura will offer the service, quality and entertainment associated with cruising at its very best and as dance will play a key part in this, it is entirely fitting for Darcey to give Azura the best possible start in life.'

After the naming ceremony, Azura will set off on its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean, which will include calls in Malaga, Corfu, Dubrovnik and Venice.
