New York is still a 'bargain basement' destination for travellers planning to take a shopping break abroad this Christmas, according to Post Office Travel Services.

The organisation carried out a Christmas shopping survey which found that people buying gifts in the Big Apple can save an average of 25% compared to what they would pay in London.

Several designer brands are reportedly offering discounts to attract customers during the festive season, including Diane von Furstenberg, Tiffany, Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein.

The Post Office revealed that the biggest saving it found in New York was on a men's shirt from Abercrombie & Fitch, which cost £23 in Manhattan compared to £70 in London.

Sarah Munro, the organisation's head of travel services, said: 'There are great bargains to be found, providing shoppers do their homework.

'Many fashion items and beauty products are significantly cheaper in New York than in London but this is not always the case and it will pay to check prices for top designer labels before travelling.'

Ms Munro also revealed that the pound is now worth 12.7% more against the US dollar than 12 months ago and has regained 23% of its value since the low point recorded in March this year.
