Germany's national tourist board has claimed that the country has the potential to become a highly popular destination for luxury travel.

A number of new products have been developed in recent years, such as spa breaks and river cruises, said Katrin Lukosch, sales promotion manager at the German National Tourist Office.

She added: 'We've got rivers like the Rhine, Elbe and Danube which provide a high quality product … and attract cruise companies.

'Germany can be offered as a river cruise destination and it also has first class city breaks of a high standard.'

Ms Lukosch went on to reveal that Berlin and Munich are the most popular destinations in Germany for city breaks.

The country could see an influx of visitors over the coming weeks as the Christmas market season gets underway, with the most popular events being held in destinations such as Cologne, Dresden and Frankfurt.

People planning to visit non-euro countries to do some Christmas shopping can head to cities like Prague and Budapest to explore their festive markets.
