New departure lounge opens at George Best Belfast City Airport
30 Nov 2009

Passengers flying out of George Best Belfast City Airport are now taking advantage of a newly-revamped departure lounge.

Forming part of the airport's £6m refurbishment of its terminal building, the refurbishment has seen the floor space of the lounge extended so as to cope with the rising number of passengers passing through the airport.

The 12,000 passengers passing through each day are now able to enjoy 60 per cent more retail and restaurant space, while work is also currently underway on introducing a new security system aimed at cutting down on queue times at the terminal.

Announcing the completion of this stage of the refurbishment project, the airport's chief executive Brian Ambrose said: "This significant private investment will enhance the customer experience as we aim to stay ahead of the curve in accommodating increasing passenger numbers."

Belfast City Airport, which was named in honour of the Northern Irish footballing star back in 2006, currently handles around 2.5 million passengers a year.

As well as flights to a number of UK airports, such as Manchester, Newcastle, Dundee and London Gatwick, it also has connections to Paris Charles de Gaulle, Cork and Reus in Spain.
