Package holidays boost Egypt's tourist numbers
7 Dec 2009

The number of people booking package holidays to Egypt has helped boost tourism figures in the Middle East country.

This is according to Zoheir Garranah, Egypt's tourism minister, who explained that the nation was one of the first to take action once the economic downturn emerged.

'One of the things we have been doing is offering packages with tour operators and also working on our marketing campaigns,' he explained.

'We are going to have to continue to work very strongly to maintain our market share.'

Mr Garranah also said more holidaymakers from Britain were booking flights to Egypt, with a 20% growth recorded over the course of last year.

Further growth is expected this year thanks to the trend of holidaying in non-eurozone countries, which has also seen Turkey's tourism market as one of the major beneficiaries.

Recent figures from the American Express Global Foreign Exchange Services Currency Index revealed a 60% increase in demand for the Egyptian pound compared to this time last year, with the company expecting the nation to remain a 'hotspot' going into next year.
