Visit Finland is celebrating the news that Helsinki will be World Design Capital in 2012.

The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design recently made the announcement that the Finnish capital was chosen from 46 cities to fill the role.

Eindhoven in the Netherlands was the runner-up.

Visit Finland revealed that Helsinki will launch an 'ambitious design programme' in 2012 in cooperation with four partner cities - Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti.

The tourism agency said that plans are in place for major developments within the city and in the surrounding region.

Jussi Pajunen, mayor of Finland's capital, said 'This is a magnificent achievement for Helsinki. It is an important recognition for us and our collaborators, as well as for the participating organisations and individuals.'

Travellers visiting Helsinki can absorb some of its culture at attractions such as the Design Museum, the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art and the National Museum of Finland.
