Malta's small size, as well as its rich history and pleasant climate, are among the factors behind the growing popularity with British holidaymakers.

That is according to the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), which has reported an upturn in the number of international visitors over the course of 2009.

According to the official tourism board, around 35 per cent of the 1.3 million annual international visitors to Malta come from the UK, with Britons second only to Germans in terms of importance to the island's tourism industry.

And, according to the MTA's director for the UK and Ireland Alex Incorvaja, Malta is likely to become even more popular among holidaymakers looking to take short-haul weekend breaks as a number of airlines increase the frequency of their services to the country.

He said: "Malta is only 360 square kilometres so we are pretty small but we have history, some fantastic hotels, nice restaurants, picturesque museums and historical sites.

"Malta is ideal for a weekend break or a seven to 14 night stay."

Recently, the Post Office revealed that Malta is the third-cheapest holiday destination in the Eurozone, behind only Spain and Portugal.
