Body scanners to be introduced at British airports
4 Jan 2010

Full-body scanners are to be introduced at UK airports in the latest attempt to increase the security of air travel, the prime minister has announced.

Speaking on BBC One's Andrew Marr Show, Gordon Brown revealed that airport operator BAA has already ordered the machines.

The company is set to begin installing the scanners at its UK hubs, starting with London Heathrow, in the near future.

A BAA spokesman told BBC News: 'It is our view that a combination of technology, intelligences and passenger profiling will help build a more robust defence against the unpredictable and changing nature of the terrorist threat to aviation.'

Mr Brown also announced that extra hand luggage checks are to be introduced to search for traces of explosives.

The latest measures are being launched following an attempted terrorist attack in the US on Christmas Day.

Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who is now being held in custody, is alleged to have tried to detonate explosives during a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.
