New York City was the leading tourist destination in the US in 2009, city mayor Michael Bloomberg announced this week.
Some 45.25m American and foreign travellers visited the city last year.
The figure represents a decline of 3.9% from 2008 - substantially lower than the 10% fall that was expected.
New York City remains the most popular destination in the US for international visitors, with 8.6m people from overseas visiting last year, placing the destination ahead of Los Angeles, its nearest competitor.
With visitors of all nationalities taken into account, Orlando was the country's second most popular location last year.
Speaking at the Greenhouse Cafe in Brooklyn, Mr Bloomberg said: 'Over the past eight years, our efforts to make New York City an even more exciting place to visit have helped produce a record number of tourists and create thousands of jobs.
'Last year, while tourism declined significantly in cities across the country, we fared far better than most. In fact, for the first time in 20 years, we were the most popular tourism destination in the country, surpassing Orlando.'
Visitor numbers are expected to increase further this year to reach 46.7m.
