Yellowstone sees record visitors in 2009

Yellowstone National Park in the US broke its record for visitor numbers in 2009, it has been announced.

Nearly 3.3m people visited the attraction last year, representing an increase of 7.5% from 2008 and beating its previous record of 3.15m set in 2007.

Every entrance to the park recorded higher visitation than the previous year, with double-digit percentage increases at the north-east and east gates.

The west entrance continued to be the busiest, with over 1.3m recreational visitors using it in 2009.

Yellowstone National Park is located mainly in the state of Wyoming but also extends into Montana and Idaho.

Established by the US Congress as a national park in March 1872, it was one of the first reserves of its kind in the country.

Visitors can look out for wildlife including grizzly bears, bison, wolves and elk, as well as geothermal features such as the Old Faithful geyser, which is one of the most popular attractions at Yellowstone.
