Check out the St Patrick's Day Parade in New York
13 Jan 2010

People visiting New York City in March might have the opportunity to see an impressive spectacle.

The annual St Patrick's Day Parade will take place on 17 March.

Thousands of Americans of Irish descent gather along Fifth Avenue and march from 44th to 86th streets.

Proceedings will get underway at 11:00, although spectators will gather along the route much earlier to ensure they get a good spot.

The parade is led by an infantry division that dates back to the American War of Independence, who are joined by their mascot, an Irish wolfhound.

New York's St Patrick's Day Parade was first held in 1766 by a group of Irishmen who were recruited to serve in the American colonies.

The mood of the event is intended to be somewhat sombre, meaning there are none of the floats or balloons that are traditionally seen at other parades, such as the one held in New York at Thanksgiving.
