Visit Barcelona for the 2010 carnival
13 Jan 2010

People planning a short getaway next month might be tempted to visit Barcelona to experience one of the most popular fixtures on the city's cultural calendar.

The Barcelona Carnival will take place over the weekend beginning 11 February.

Visitors and locals treat themselves to various indulgences and luxuries during the carnival before the beginning of Lent, a traditional period of fasting and abstinence.

Celebrations get underway on 'Jueves lardero', or 'fat Thursday', when events including a tortilla competition take place in Barcelona.

Visitors will also be able to sample spicy meats and other mouth-watering snacks sold at stalls in the city.

Celebrations continue until the Saturday, when the carnival reaches its climax with the 'Gran Rua de Carnaval', a giant parade that features some 1,500 people and is watched by over 30,000 spectators.

Visitors will be able to see ornate carriages, marching groups and floats proceed through the streets of Barcelona as onlookers shower them with confetti.
