Dubai International airport handled a record 40.9m passengers in 2009, it has been announced.
Traffic increased by 9.2% from the previous year, putting the hub on course to become the world's fastest-growing major airport in terms of international traffic.
According to Airports Council International, the only global gateways other than Dubai to report growth in passengers last year were Istanbul (6.3%), Kuala Lumpur (4.6%) and Cairo (1.5%).
Dubai Airports expects the hub to experience further increases in traffic this year.
Paul Griffiths, chief executive of the group, said: 'Dubai's location, which puts it just four hours' flying time from one third of the world's population
an open skies policy that welcomes competition, top notch infrastructure and compelling tourist attractions. All add up to make Dubai a very attractive hub for an ever increasing number of travellers.'
If the forecast for 13.6% growth in international passenger traffic this year proves accurate, Dubai International will handle some 46m travellers.
