British travellers planning a beach holiday this year need look no further than nearby European countries for some luxurious seafront hotspots, according to the Sunday Times.

In a list of Europe's top 20 beaches for 2010, the newspaper recommended Plage Conguel in Brittany, France, which is reportedly ideal for families.

Other French entries in the list include Lac de Mondely in the Pyrenees region, Collioure in Languedoc and Piemanson in Camargue.

The Sunday Times also recommended several beaches in Spain, starting with Cala d'Aiguafreda, which is situated north of Begur on the Costa Brava.

People looking for a traditional beach holiday could consider La Concha in San Sebastian, which was described as 'boisterous but beautiful', while young travellers heading to Ibiza can check out Las Salinas.

The newspaper also recommended coastal hotspots in some less mainstream destinations, such as Cala Luna on Sardinia and Bonj 'Les Bains' on the Croatian island of Hvar.
