'Strong year' for Edinburgh in 2009
22 Jan 2010
Edinburgh's tourism industry performed well in 2009 despite the economic problems in the UK, VisitScotland has revealed.
Sinead Feltoe, the agency's regional director for Edinburgh and East Central, said visits to attractions increased by 4.2% between January and October compared to the same period in 2008.
Edinburgh Castle, the Scotch Whisky Experience and Camera Obscura were among the leading highlights for visitors.
Ms Feltoe claimed that tourists are 'spoilt for choice' in the Scottish capital.
She described the city's famous festivals as 'a must' and pointed out that visitors can also 'explore the many museums and art galleries in the new and old towns or find the perfect spot on Arthur's Seat to take in the city with its stunning views across the Forth'.
'If you want to go a bit further afield, Rosslyn Chapel takes you on an incredible journey into history or for more of the outdoors adventure you have numerous championship golf courses on the doorstep and the award-winning Seabird Centre at North Berwick,' Ms Feltoe added.
According to a recent report from PKF, Edinburgh was the only Scottish city to see an increase in hotel occupancy during the month of November 2009.
