Giant's Causeway to benefit from new funding

Travellers visiting Northern Ireland will soon be able to make use of a number of new facilities at the Giant's Causeway, one of the region's leading attractions.

Located on the north Antrim coast, the causeway is made up of around 40,000 interlocking basalt columns that emerged following a volcanic eruption millions of years ago.

It is Northern Ireland's only Unesco World Heritage site and is owned on behalf of the nation by the National Trust.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) announced that it would provide a grant of £3m to the location, which will enable the construction of new visitor facilities to offer more information on its history and geology.

It was also announced that the Florence Institute for Boys in Liverpool will receive £3.7m for repair and conservation work.

Dame Jenny Abramsky, chair of the HLF, said: 'From Northern Ireland's breathtaking coastal landscape to Liverpool's first ever youth club, these places have mass appeal.

'Heritage means different things to different people but what is really important is these places reflect the UK's multi-layered and fascinating history.'
