Heathrow hosts a 'cockney knees-up'

London Heathrow hosted a 'traditional cockney knees-up' over the weekend.

The airport revealed that a number of events and activities were arranged yesterday (31 January) to pay tribute to some of the characteristics that define London.

International travellers arriving at Heathrow were greeted by representatives of the Pearly Kings and Queens, an organised group that celebrates working class culture in London.

Terminal announcements were also adjusted to fit in with the theme, with passengers being reminded to 'take care on the apples and pears'.

Mike Brown, chief operating officer at the airport, said: 'We are trying to bring some of London's unique characteristics to Heathrow, to entertain passengers but also to show off some of the city's history and its culture.

'The Pearly Kings and Queens are very welcome and we hope passengers enjoy the knees-up.'

Traveller William McCarthy from Auckland enjoyed the unusual event, saying: 'I have never seen anything quite like this. What a welcome to the UK!'
