New Zealand welcomes record visitors in December
5 Feb 2010

Tourism New Zealand has revealed that the country's international visitor arrivals showed 'strong signs of recovery' in December 2009.

An extra 19,000 people visited the country as its summer season got underway, marking a 5.9% increase from the previous year and contributing to the highest monthly figure on record.

Arrivals for the whole of 2009 were broadly in line with the year before, with a fall of only 120 visitors recorded despite the global economic crisis.

Kevin Bowler, chief executive of Tourism New Zealand, said: 'It was positive to end the year on a high, with December recording New Zealand's highest ever visitor arrivals for a calendar month.

'Returning economic stability is leading to a rebound in some of our main visitor markets, providing some light at the end of the tunnel for many tourism operators after what was a difficult year in 2009.'

The UK was New Zealand's second biggest market after Australia in December 2009.
