Abu Dhabi hotels welcome more guests in 2009

Abu Dhabi bucked the negative trend that emerged across the tourism industry last year by achieving an increase in hotel occupancy, new figures show.

The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) revealed that guest numbers rose 2% from the previous year to reach 1.54m in 2009, with more than 4.67m overnight stays recorded.

Particularly strong figures were reported towards the end of 2009, with year-on-year growth of 16% in the final quarter and a 43% increase in United Arab Emirates hotel guests in December alone.

ADTA director general Mubarak Al Muhairi said: 'The year ended on a high with a very successful last quarter driven by major events and an Eid break with strong stay-at-home characteristics.'

He added: 'While the last 12 months have been challenging, as they have for all destinations, we believe growth is a very solid performance in the face of global decline.'

The UK was the main market for Abu Dhabi's hotel sector last year with a total of 96,709 visitors, followed by the US with 67,804.

Around 1.65m hotel guests are anticipated in the emirate this year.
