Caribbean tourism sector 'to grow this year'

Caribbean tourism sector 'to grow this year'
11 Feb 2010

The Caribbean is set to prove an increasingly popular destination among tourists this year as the world emerges from the recession, according to official forecasts.

Moderate growth and a rebound in visitor arrivals have been predicted by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO).

A total of 22.1m travellers visited the region last year, compared to 22.9m in 2008.

The CTO referred to positive signs in the fourth quarter of 2009 - when visitor numbers were 1% higher than in the corresponding period of 2008 - and forecast growth of up to 3% this year.

Hugh Riley, the organisation's secretary general, said there are many reasons to be optimistic for the coming year, despite the 'obvious challenges' that still exist.

He added: 'While the global economy is still in a state of flux, interest in the Caribbean remains extremely high.

'We, along with our destination, hotel and cruise partners, have continued to promote the region and we feel that in an increasingly hectic world with all the related pressures, now, more than ever, life needs the Caribbean and we're here to make life easier for our visitors.'
