11 Feb 2010

People with an interest in modern art will be able to visit a new exhibition in Madrid this year.

The Spanish capital's Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza will host Monet and Abstraction from 23 February to 30 May.

A variety of pieces by the French Impressionist painter Claude Monet will feature in the display, from his ethereal landscape studies to pieces he created at Giverny, the house in Normandy where he spent the last 20 years of his life.

The aim of the exhibition will be to show the influence that Monet had on the abstract art movements that emerged after World War II.

Pieces by the likes of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Gerhard Richter will be shown at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and Fundacion Caja Madrid to highlight the links between Monet and the later artists.

The Madrid museum will also host an exhibition on Italian Renaissance painter Domenico Ghirlandaio this year, which will open on 23 June.
