Visit Finland has encouraged travellers to head to the country next month to see an 'epic' snowball fight.

The European Championships of Yukigassen - the Japanese word for snowball fight - will take place in Kemijarvi, Finland's northernmost town, from 26 to 28 March.

Yukigassen has a simple objective - to hit one's opponents with snowballs and drive them out of the court.

Individual contests consist of three periods of three minutes, during which two teams of seven to ten players battle against each other.

Purpose-built machines are used before the game to allow players to amass an arsenal of up to 270 snowballs.

The sport of competitive snowball throwing was invented in the mountain town of Sobetsu in northern Japan in 1987 and first spread to Europe about 15 years ago.

Annual events are also held in Australia and Canada.

People planning to take part in this year's Yukigassen tournament in Finland should submit their applications before 12 March.
