Hadrian's Wall to be illuminated
18 Feb 2010

Members of the public are being invited to a special event at Segedunum Roman Fort next month.

The Wallsend site is hosting a free theatre performance to celebrate the start of 'Illuminating Hadrian's Wall'.

For the first time in 1,600 years, the entire length of the wall is to be lit up as part of the new project, which kicks off on 13 March.

Theatre Anu is to stage an act at Segedunum Roman Fort at 17:15, which will feature angels appearing around its ruins.

Half an hour after this, the first light will be illuminated at the fort and the 'Line of Light' will then continue westwards until it reaches the Cumbrian coast.

A total of 500 lights are to line the wall, each of which have been placed 250 metres apart.

Linda Tuttiett, chief executive of Hadrian's Wall Heritage Ltd, said: 'Segedunum will provide a great venue for people to enjoy this amazing event.

'As well as the chance to see the first points of light illuminated, the audience will be able watch an unusual piece of street theatre and fireworks will help to bring the show to a colourful close.'
