Helsinki to get high-speed rail link to St Petersburg
26 Feb 2010
Travellers will soon be offered a new experience in Europe when a high-speed rail service is launched between Helsinki and St Petersburg.
Visit Finland revealed that the first of the high-speed Allegro trains ordered for the service had arrived from Italy and is undergoing static testing.
Track trials will begin in Finland during March and in Russia the following month.
When the service is launched, passengers will be able to travel between Helsinki and St Petersburg in three and a half hours, a substantial reduction from the current journey time of over six hours.
Customs and border inspection checks will be carried out onboard, meaning the train will not have to stop halfway along its route.
Visit Finland said the new high-speed service will 'gradually increase the number of rail services between the two cities, making it easier for visitors to combine the two countries for business or leisure purposes'.
