Travellers visiting the US are expected to benefit from a new piece of legislation that received a strong vote of approval in the Senate this week.
The initiative will lead to the creation of a public-private partnership that will be responsible for promoting the US as a holiday destination and better explaining travel security policies to foreign visitors.
President Obama is set to sign the legislation into law in the coming days, according to the US Travel Association.
The programme is expected to attract some 1.6m additional visitors to the country every year and lead to a substantial increase in consumer spending.
Roger Dow, president and chief executive of the US Travel Association, said: 'This is a historic victory for the US economy and the one in eight American workers whose jobs depend on travel.
'The United States Congress has sent a clear message that travel is a high priority to our nation and that tangible steps must be taken to increase travel to and within the United States.'
Caroline Beteta, president of the California Tourism Commission, said the new programme can make travel 'an even stronger economic engine for America'.
