Amsterdam prepares for Queen's Day
1 Mar 2010
Travellers visiting Amsterdam in April will be able to experience one of the city's most popular and widely recognised annual events.
Queen's Day falls on 30 April every year and prompts parties and celebrations all over Holland, many of which get underway the evening before.
The event dates back to 1885 and since 1949 has been held on 30 April, a date that was set to mark the birthday of Queen Juliana, who was on the throne at the time.
People visiting Amsterdam for Queen's Day will be able to see elaborate parades, street theatre and fireworks displays during the celebrations, as well as processions of decorated boats along the Dutch capital's canals.
In the centre of the city, a giant market known locally as the Vrijmarkt sells a huge range of items that could provide ideal souvenirs for foreign visitors.
Several other cities across Holland host events to mark Queen's Day, including Rotterdam and The Hague.
