Travellers can make sure they experience the best of Hong Kong's culinary scene this year by using a new application for the iPhone.

The Hong Kong Local Delicacies guidebook, which was recently adapted for use on the mobile device, features information on popular dishes such as congee, noodles and rice, as well as more adventurous options.

Visitors who would like to try the local language during their trip can use an aspect of the guide that confirms the pronunciation of specific dishes in Cantonese.

The application also features videos promoting Hong Kong, details of specific restaurants, a guide to different foods by district and inbuilt social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter.

According to the Hong Kong Tourism Board, there will be a further boost to the local culinary scene later this year when celebrity chef Jamie Oliver opens his first Italian family-style restaurant in the city.

Food lovers who fancy trying some exotic cuisine this year can catch flights to Hong Kong with Emirates, British Airways, Qantas and other carriers.
